Pauline Olivero’s sound installation
We invite you to see Pauline Olivero’s installation “Dear.John: A Canon on the Name of Cage” at the Czartoryski Palace by the Litewski Square where the CAGE100 Symposium is being held.
CODES start this week
We would like to invite you for a unique inauguration of the festival on the 12th of May – a concert of a piece composed by manuel m. hervás lino from Spain for 15 Lublin bells. It will start at 7:45pm and will be broadcasted from the church towers and screened at the “Po Farze” Square. Just after 8:00pm Marcin Masecki’s “Polonaise” will start at the same place. He will perform together with an orchestra consisting of excellent Polish musicians such as Michał Górczyński, Wacław Zimpel, Tomasz Duda and other. For the end of the festival we’ve prepared a bluegrass dance night performed by The Coal Porters from London.

Workshop with Soundpainter Walter Thompson for the “Lublin Soundpainting Orchestra”
14–16 May, 2pm-6pm
Musical Theatre, 5 Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej Street, Lublin
During the Soundpainting workshop, each participant will learn the basic 44 gestures as a performer and also as a Soundpainter – a composer in real time. They will learn what each gesture means, how to play it and how to sign it. After completing the first 44 gestures participants will continue learning and expanding their vocabulary and begin exploring live composition concepts with the Soundpainting language.
At the conclusion of the Soundpainting workshop each participant will be familiar with approximately 75 Soundpainting gestures both as a performer and as a Soundpainter.
The Soundpainting gestures are multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary. Musicians, Dancers, Actors, and Visual Artists all equally work together in the same group. During the workshop the participants will discover how the Soundpainting language works their discipline as well as with the other disciplines.
Note: Though the Soundpainting language incorporates improvisation, a previous knowledge of improvisation is not required – anyone, no matter what level or ability, can participate in a Soundpainting group.

Vocal workshop with Pauline Oliveros based on the Deep Listening method

Deep Listening is experiencing heightened or expanded awareness of sound, silence and sounding.
We will explore core concepts of improvisation in a meditative atmosphere vocalists of all abilities may participate in the Deep Listening exercises during the intensive. All styles and abilities will be welcomed in an open exploratory circle.
Some of the benefits of Deep Listening practice include expanded awareness of time and space, relaxation that supports musical activity, an expanding sense of humor, dissolution of old limits and opening to new patterns. There will be opportunities to work in pairs, trios and in larger groups, drawing on Deep Listening practices explored in the open circle exercises.
The goal of the workhsop will be to improvise from the meditative listening in solo, small ensemble and large group ensemble configurations with a creative musical finale of presentations.

Experiment with your voice!
We invite you to participate in a voice workshop with Phil Minton, a great specialist in experimental singing. The workshop is a part of “The Feral Choir” project – a concert which will be the result of four-day vocal work and are addressed not only to singers but to anyone who takes a delight in the freedom to experiment.
The workshop will take place 17th – 20th of May 2011, between 2:00-6:00pm in Crossroads Centre at 39 Krakowskie Przedmieście Street in Lublin.

Press conference of the third edition the Festival of Traditional and Avant-garde Music will be held this Thursday on the 14th of April 2011. We will announce the program of 2011′s edition! Apart from this you can find out all about ticket sales and we’ll be answering questions regarding the festival. Vote for CODES! Between the 1st and 9th of February 2011 you can vote in Gazeta Wyborcza’s contest for the best Cultural Event of 2010.

Yesterday evening we received official information that Lou Reed will not perform on May 15th
in Lublin. At the concert in the courtyard of Lublin Castle Laurie Anderson and John Zorn will perform with the outstanding bassist, Bill Laswell.
At the same time we would like to apologize all fans of Lou Reed. We would also like to inform that the change is due to reasons beyond us, the organizers of the Festival of Traditional and Avant-garde Music CODES.

Lublin’s students have a chance to meet great artists
CODES Festival goes out to the students with a unique proposal – a chance to meet famous musicians and composers. The meetings of students with Laurie Anderson, John Zorn and Philip Glass will be held in the large auditorium of the Faculty of Humanities MCSU. The artists will talk about their work and are willing to answer questions from their fans. The moderators of the meetings are lecturers of MCSU’s Institute of English, Andrzej Antoszek and Paweł Frelik.
